“Inner Strength”
I painted this painting quite a few years ago and it remains one of my favorites. Growing up in Africa and having 8 children from Africa, the continent and culture is close to my heart.
I poured tears and prayers into this one. I remember at one point where I just lay on top of the painting tears rolling down my checks over the faces I had just painted on paper. I fell asleep trying to figure out how to portray the strength of these children. I awoke with the idea to etch the animals behind them.
Originally, it depicts the story of child slaves who have inner strength to survive through their nightmare when there seems to be no hope at all.
Deep within they have the dignity of a lion, the tenacity and steadfastness of a rhinoceros and the strength of an elephant to HOLD ON until help comes.
